One-on-One Tutoring
There are several programs that offer opportunities either during the class day or after school for volunteers to tutor one on one with students.

Literacy Champions

Literacy Champion volunteers meet with an elementary-aged student once a week to provide support in strengthening literacy skills through reading books and poems, writing stories and playing literacy games. Volunteers work one-to-one with a student in 3rd-5th grade. An on-site coordinator is there to provide initial literacy training to the volunteer tutors and on-going support throughout the program. Literacy Champions take place after school (3:00-3:45) at two campuses, Allison Elementary in Southeast Austin at 515 Vargas Rd. and Sanchez Elementary, Central Austin at 73 San Marcos St.

Volunteer Commitment: The program occurs after school from 3:00 – 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday (depending on the school). This is an on-going commitment and helps to have volunteers that can commit to a weekly schedule and be with the program through the school year. Program start date is early October.

School Locations:
Allison Elementary (Thursdays, 3:00 – 3:45 p.m.)
Sanchez Elementary (Tuesdays, 3:00 – 3:45 p.m.)

Communities In Schools

The mission of Communities in Schools (CIS) is "We keep kids in school." You can assist an at-risk student in achieving academic success while also helping to provide a caring and supportive scholastic environment. Tutors may participate in a variety of instructive activities with students, such as completing homework assignments, playing educational games, reading or working on the computer. Tutors may work with a child in subjects such as English, math, science, reading, writing, or any other subject they may be having difficulties with.

Volunteer Commitment: CIS tutors are required to commit at least one hour a week - Monday through Friday, during the school day - for the duration of the academic year. Tutors should have good listening and communication skills, and basic knowledge in one or more subject areas.

School Locations:
CIS needs tutors in various elementary, middle and high schools in Austin . We will help you find a location convenient for you.

Program Contact: If you are interested in becoming a tutor with CIS, please click on the following for our online volunteer application: http://www.cisaustin.org/page-volunteer-online-application.cfm. Tutors also must submit two letters of reference and are subject to a background check. Tutors will also undergo an initial interview with a member of the CIS volunteer services staff, and attend a CIS volunteer orientation. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us at volunteer@cisaustin.org, or call 512.464.9701.

VICTORY Tutorial Program

VICTORY is a collaborative effort between AISD and the City of Austin and the Austin Public Library. We provide free tutoring services to students from grades 1-12 in all academic subjects.  Most students are at-risk and struggling, but we also have some AP and Honors students who are working to improve or maintain grades. Currently we are in eight libraries, with plans to expand to at least 2 more in the fall semester. Students come for one hour once a week; a few come more often, depending on tutor availability. We are not a drop-in program, so tutoring is 1:1 by appointment for a semester.  That way the same tutor and student work together every session.  Tutoring hours at most sites are from 3:00-8:30 p.m., Mondays-Thursdays.

Volunteer Commitment:

Minimum commitment of one hour once a week for a semester.  Volunteers can choose the library, day, time, grade level, and subject they are most comfortable working with.
