Best-Practice Mentor Programs

Project Mentor Update:
Since mentoring is a unique type of volunteer opportunity, APIE requires two people to serve as character references. Please have names and email addresses of two references available when you register.

To enter this information when you register click on the Authorizations and Affiliations tab. On the left hand side, you will see an area marked For MENTORS. Please click on it and enter the names and email addresses of your references.

** Elementary Mentors: please note that there are 2 pages of opportunities. If you do not see your campus, please continue scrolling down to click to the second set of records (51-100).

If you have any questions, please contact Christin Alvarado, Mentor Program Coordinator, at calvarado@austinpartners.org or 637-0983.

With programs at over 70 campuses, School-Based Mentoring is especially relevant to Austin ISD. A one hour a week visit can make a lasting impact on the life of a child.

Research shows that mentoring keeps students engaged in the learning process, reduces the dropout rate, and increases the likelihood of graduation. A relationship with an adult can be a primary reason for a student to stay in school.

Although there are no special skills required to mentor a student, mentors are special people who want to spend quality time with younger members of their community. Mentors are good listeners, caring friends, and trusted adults.

Some campuses have programs that meet Mentoring Best Practices and are designated as Recognized.

Recognized Best Practice Programs:
  • Collect written permission for volunteer contact, media, and data release for all students participating in program.
  • Attend APIE Mentor Coordinator Meeting.
  • Only accept mentors that have an approved criminal history check and whose references have been checked.
  • Verify (either campus or APIE) mentor birthday using drivers license or other ID with the birth date provided in the approval report.
  • Contact mentors within 48 hours of receiving approval information.
  • Discuss mentor relationship expectations with students that will be matched.
  • Match mentors and mentees based on preference, shared interests and/or experiences if possible.
  • Secure mentor match and visit time within one week of receiving approval information.
  • Introduce mentor and mentee at first visit. Work with them on bonding activities.
  • Provide orientation to mentor, discussing:
    • Background of individual student
    • Sign in procedures
    • Rules for campus visitors
    • How best to communicate, especially regarding:
      • When student is absent
      • Informing teacher when mentor is unable to make visit
      • How to get support on difficult issues
  • Follow up, at least once a month, with mentors and mentees to monitor experience.
  • Track and monitor visits with sign in book, enter into APIE database or send to APIE monthly.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness:
    • Assist APIE with mid-year and end-of-year surveys for students and mentors
  • Provide mentor recognition (can be through APIE or at a campus level).
  • Ensure closure of mentoring relationships that will not continue.
  • Ensure re-connection of continuing relationships in the Fall.
